Hesychius I of Vienne

About Hesychius I of Vienne
Hesychius I, also called Isicius, was bishop of Vienne and the father of Avitus, who also became bishop of that city. His wife was Audentia, and another son, Apollinaris, became bishop of Valence. They belonged to a family of senatorial rank.
Avitus preserves a glimpse of their father in his poem addressed to his sister Fuscina. He presents episcopal service as a new responsibility taken up after worldly honors. The passage places their father among relatives whose public standing was followed by service in the Church.
The poem remembers a family shaped by religious commitments. In her study of women’s dedicated life, Lindsay Rudge reads it as a celebration of family piety. Its account of Fuscina’s upbringing gives particular attention to the women around her.
A later Life of Fuscina says that Hesychius founded a monastery dedicated to Gervasius and Protasius, where she entered religious life. Rudge cautions that the late date of this Life makes the foundation claim suspect. It cannot safely be treated as an established achievement of his episcopate.
His identity requires care. He is distinct from Hesychius II, a later bishop of Vienne, although modern calendar references have sometimes combined information about the two. Per Einar Odden explicitly discusses this confusion.
Nominis lists the first Hesychius under the name Ysile and gives his feast as March 15.
