Hilarion of Ancyra

Portrait of Hilarion of Ancyra

About Hilarion of Ancyra

Hilarion is remembered with Proclus as a martyr associated with Ancyra in Galatia. Both the Roman Martyrology and the Orthodox Church commemorate them on July 12. The Orthodox calendar also calls him Hilary of Ancyra; these name forms refer to the same July 12 martyr, distinct from Hilarion the Great, an abbot connected with Gaza.

The received martyr story portrays Hilarion as Proclus's nephew and says he confessed his Christian faith after meeting Proclus on the way to execution. It gives a sequence of trials, tortures, and deaths under Trajan. The *Acta Sanctorum* dossier preserves this tradition, while the short calendar notices establish the commemoration more firmly than the story's speeches and scenes. Those episodes should be attributed to the received life, not reported as independently verified events.

The evidence reviewed supports a concise profile with Hilarion's identity, Proclus association, Ancyra setting, and July 12 feast. It does not establish an exact birth or death date or a full historical chronology.
