Biography
Honoratus of Vercelli

About Honoratus of Vercelli
Honoratus’s epitaph remembers him as a disciple of Eusebius of Vercelli. It says that he shared the hardships of exile and imprisonment with his teacher. This memorial testimony connects his earlier life with Eusebius, without giving a birthplace, a birth year or a detailed itinerary.
Honoratus became bishop of Vercelli after a contested vacancy. The diocesan succession lists his episcopate from 396 to 415.
Ambrose’s letter to the church of Vercelli describes the divisions that had delayed the choice of a bishop and urges agreement. It provides contemporary context for Honoratus’s appointment, rather than a full biography of him.
In Paulinus’s account of Ambrose’s death, Honoratus was present in Milan and brought him Communion. The episode, recalled in Benedict XVI’s 2007 audience, places Honoratus beside Ambrose at the end of his life in 397.
The same inscription calls him the city’s third bishop and praises his teaching and conduct. It portrays a pastor who put his own preaching into practice, joined to Eusebius both during life and in the hope of heaven. Its language is commemorative praise, preserving the community’s view of his ministry.
