About Houardon of Leon

Houardon is remembered in the episcopal list of the former bishopric of Léon. Nominis distinguishes this recorded name from later traditions about his earlier life.

Those traditions describe an arrival from Britain, a hermit’s life near Landerneau and a reputation that led the faithful to choose him as bishop. They do not provide contemporary testimony to those episodes.

His chronology is unsettled. Nominis gives 577 as his death year, whereas the Landerneau chronology credited to historian Jéhan Bazin places his death in 650. These competing dates should not be combined into a precise lifespan. The local Catholic commemoration listed by Nominis falls on November 19.

Houardon’s name remains attached to a parish church in Landerneau. The regional heritage inventory records a substantial rebuilding between 1858 and 1861, following plans by the diocesan architect Joseph Bigot. Elements from the earlier church were reused, including its south porch. The building described in that inventory therefore belongs to much later generations of worshippers, rather than to Houardon’s lifetime.
