About Hubertus
Hubertus succeeded Lambert as bishop in the region of Maastricht and Liège during the early eighth century. The Wallonia historical reference distinguishes this episcopal career from later stories about his conversion. His leadership belongs to the period when the church’s institutional centre was moving toward Liège.
He died in 727, and his early cult was associated with Liège. In 825 his remains were transferred to Andage in the Ardennes, a place that later took his name. That translation helps explain why Hubert became especially associated with the forests of the region.
The familiar hunting story of a stag bearing a cross belongs to later legend and cannot serve as a contemporary account of his vocation. It can be acknowledged as part of devotional history without replacing the better grounded evidence of his episcopate and the movement of his relics.
