About Hugh of Châteauneuf

Hugh was born in 1053, a son of the lord of Châteauneuf-d’Isère. After serving as a canon at Valence, he became bishop of Grenoble in 1080. The local diocese remembers a long episcopate spent working for the church’s independence from lay control.

He sought reform among clergy and defended church property against secular lords. He also supported new monastic communities. The diocese specifically connects him with Bruno and his companions at the Chartreuse, and with the foundation of Chalais. These institutions mattered well beyond his own lifetime.

Hugh remained bishop until his death on April 1, 1132. The diocese records canonization three years later. His life is distinct from that of Hugh of Cluny, the abbey’s long-serving abbot in the same broad period.
