About Hugh of Cluny

Hugh of Semur became abbot of Cluny in 1049 after Odilo. He led the Burgundian abbey for about sixty years, a long period in which its network and influence grew across Europe. The national monument’s history places him at the centre of the abbey’s great building campaign.

In 1088 Hugh initiated a much larger abbey church, later known as Cluny III. Its scale expressed the resources and ambitions of the community. The building project required artisans and sustained institutional support; it was not the work of one pair of hands.

He died in 1109. The abbey preserves his memory as a saint and abbot. His identity should remain separate from Hugh of Châteauneuf, bishop of Grenoble, whose ministry and institutions were different.
