About Hyacinth of Rome

Hyacinth is an ancient Roman martyr commemorated with Protus. Early Roman calendars and sacramentaries attest their veneration. Accounts linking them to the household of Eugenia provide a fuller story, but those narrative details are later tradition rather than secure personal biography.

The two were associated with the cemetery of Bassilla on the Via Salaria. In 1845 an excavation found Hyacinth’s tomb intact in the catacombs of Saint Hermes. That material evidence is unusually valuable for a martyr whose personal life is otherwise obscure. It secures the identity of the Roman martyr without supplying a year of death.

The Vatican commemorates the pair on September 11. Hyacinth of Rome should not be merged with Hyacinth of Caesarea or the medieval Dominican Hyacinth of Poland; a shared name does not make their cults the same.
