Hyginus

Portrait of Hyginus

About Hyginus

Hyginus led the Roman church during a period of argument about Christian teaching. Irenaeus places the arrival of Valentinus and Cerdon in Rome during his episcopate. His account describes Cerdon's changing relationship with the congregation; it does not identify every disciplinary decision as Hyginus's own action.

In a letter preserved by Eusebius, Irenaeus remembers Hyginus among Roman leaders who maintained peace with visitors following a different Paschal custom. The example concerns hospitality despite disagreement over observance.

The Vatican lists his pontificate as beginning in 138 and ending in 142 or 149. These alternatives belong to the chronology of his office. Eusebius reports his death after four years as bishop.

Kirsch cautions that the later philosopher designation may reflect confusion with other authors. He also finds no early authority establishing a martyr's death.

Nominis reproduces a martyrology notice placing his remembrance in Rome in 142, although its heading gives 140. The Finnish Orthodox Church's name index includes Hyginus, pope of Rome, under January 11. These commemorations preserve his reception without supplying a detailed personal life.
