Hypatius of Gangra

About Hypatius of Gangra
Hypatius is venerated as a bishop of Gangra, a city in Paphlagonia in Asia Minor. The Orthodox Church in America remembers him on March 31 and November 16. An older Roman Martyrology lists him on November 14. These observances identify a long-standing cult, but the surviving accounts do not provide a secure chronology of his life.
Later lives say he attended the Council of Nicaea and was killed by Novatians while returning to Gangra. One Orthodox account dates the killing to 326 and describes his burial and later miracles. A historical reference work cautions that the stoning story is not based on historical data; even the participation of Gangra's bishop at Nicaea is described as probable rather than certain. These scenes therefore belong to the tradition surrounding Hypatius, not to a firmly documented biography.
Hypatius's remembrance continued far beyond Paphlagonia. The OCA describes his place in Russian liturgical writing and the later association of Kostroma's Ipatiev monastery with his name. Those later witnesses show the reach of his veneration without settling the events of his fourth-century life.
