About Ignazia Verzeri

Ignazia Verzeri was born in Bergamo on July 31, 1801, and is known in religious life as Teresa Eustochio Verzeri. The Vatican biography describes her early education at home and a long period of discernment about her vocation. Her family and the Bergamo clergy formed part of the setting in which she made that choice.

After time in a Benedictine house, she left to found the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with Giuseppe Benaglio in 1831. The new community addressed the education and care of girls and women. Its work took shape during political and social change in nineteenth-century Italy.

She died in Brescia on March 3, 1852, and was canonized in 2001. The name Ignazia in the backlog should be treated as a birth-name reference to the same founder, not as a second saint separate from Teresa Eustochio.
