About Joachim Sakakibara
Joachim Sakakibara served the Franciscans in Osaka. Yuki’s account says that a catechist baptized him during a serious illness. In gratitude he helped build the friars’ house and remained there as a cook. It remembers his kindness and readiness to serve despite a strong temperament.
The Secular Franciscan Order also describes him as a catechist and a physician who treated poor people without payment. Other historical summaries emphasize his work as a cook. The notices do not supply a detailed record of his medical training or career.
He was crucified at Nagasaki with the twenty-six martyrs on February 5, 1597. The group was canonized by PiusIX in 1862.
