John of Uglich

Portrait of John of Uglich

About John of Uglich

John was a prince of Uglich who is remembered in the Orthodox calendar under both his princely name and his monastic name, Ignatius. The short notice says that he and his brother Demetrius were imprisoned by their uncle John and remained in confinement for thirty-two years.

Before his death, John received monastic tonsure. The notice also calls him a wonderworker, without describing particular miracles. These are the limits of the consulted account: it does not establish a precise birth date, death date, or a detailed explanation of the family conflict. His May 19 commemoration preserves the memory of a captive prince whose final recorded step was entry into monastic life.
