About John Wu Wenyin
John Wu Wenyin was a Catholic community leader from Dongertou in Hebei. The church biography describes years of local service and efforts to share his faith with neighbours. In July 1900, Boxer forces attacked the village but were initially resisted by Christians and non-Christians together.
A magistrate then ordered John's arrest. The received account describes a conversation with his widowed mother before he was taken away, followed by harsh treatment at trial. He died while in the authorities' custody. His story preserves both local cooperation during the attack and the subsequent targeting of a Catholic leader.
