About John Zhang Jingguang
John Zhang Jingguang began seminary study in Shanxi as a child. The deaths of his parents marked his early years, but he continued through the junior seminary and entered the major seminary at Taiyuan. He belonged to the Franciscan third order and received the ministry of acolyte before further theological study.
During the Boxer uprising, the seminary closed. He was among the students arrested and imprisoned with the wider Catholic mission community. He was killed at Taiyuan in July 1900. His account distinguishes the ministries and studies he had completed from priestly ordination, which he had not received.
