About Joseph Cho Yun-ho

Joseph Cho Yun-ho was born at Nambangjae in Sinchang in 1848. His parents were Peter Cho Hwa-so and Magdalena Han. After his mother’s death, he moved with his father near Jeonju and married Lucia Yi.

During the persecution of 1866, Joseph surrendered after his father’s arrest. They encouraged one another to remain committed to Catholicism. Joseph refused demands to deny his faith.

He was killed near Seocheongyo outside Jeonju in December 1866, after his father’s execution. The encyclopedia gives December 23 as the principal date, with December 18 and 28 as alternatives.

The bishops’ conference describes death from beating, while the encyclopedia records strangulation after beating.
