Juliana of Nicomedia

About Juliana of Nicomedia
Juliana of Nicomedia is honored as a virgin martyr. The Orthodox Church in America's life tells of a Christian woman who refused the marriage arranged for her and endured punishment rather than yield.
Vatican News places her birth around 285 in Nicomedia and her execution around 305. These dates belong to the received account, not a surviving contemporary record of her life.
The historian Johann Peter Kirsch calls her Acts legendary. Their story of a body carried from Nicomedia to Italy, he argues, led to confusion with a distinct Juliana venerated at Cumae. That distinction matters: Italian relic traditions cannot simply be treated as a journey made by the Nicomedian martyr's remains.
Her story also entered Old English poetry in a work attributed to Cynewulf. The OCA account gives 304 for her execution, illustrating the variation in the traditional chronology.
In the OCA's kontakion, Juliana appears as a bride of Christ whose wounded body bears witness to her love. The closing line affirms her intercession for others.
