Juvenal of Narni

About Juvenal of Narni
Juvenal is remembered as the first bishop of Narni in Umbria. The Catholic Church in Norway cautions that little is known of his life and that even the received compilation includes legendary material.
Tradition places his death around 376. Although Gregory the Great called him a martyr, the church account regards that classification as uncertain and notes confusion with other bishops of the same name.
His tomb and oratory remain associated with Narni. The source also identifies a local patronage in Narni and the Diocese of Fossano, and lists May 3 as his commemoration.
The Diocese of Terni describes Juvenal's surviving life as a text written after the seventh century and of limited historical value. Its discussion preserves the difference between remembrance as a bishop and confessor and Gregory's use of the title martyr. The later tomb and cathedral history is more extensive than the surviving evidence for his individual life.
