Portrait of Kalliopi

About Kalliopi

Kalliopi is remembered as a young Christian woman whose commitment to Christ brought her into conflict with an unwanted suitor. Her received story belongs to the martyr tradition associated with the reign of Decius in the middle of the third century.

The Norwegian church account describes her refusal to marry a man who would not respect her decision. In that telling, he answered her refusal with accusations before a court. She continued to profess her Christian faith rather than accept the terms he offered.

A Greek Orthodox metropolitan account presents the same saint through her dedication to Christ, service to the sick and refusal to abandon her faith. It describes arrest, torture and eventual beheading. These episodes are preserved as a religious martyr narrative, rather than a continuous contemporary record of her life.

The Catholic calendar in Norway lists June 8 as her commemoration. The different emphases of the received accounts leave much of her individual life unknown.
