Laurence of Turov

Portrait of Laurence of Turov

About Laurence of Turov

Laurence lived as a hermit before becoming bishop of Turov. The Orthodox Church in America’s notice first places him at the monastery of Demetrius near the Kiev Caves, then at the Caves monastery itself. It remembers a reputation for healing as part of his ascetic life.

The account dates his elevation to the see of Turov to 1182 and names him as a successor to Cyril of Turov. It places his death in 1194 and his burial in the Near Caves. The heading’s reference to the Far Caves is inconsistent with the burial statement; the body of the account is followed here. His church commemoration falls on January 29.
