About Lawrence Bai Xiaoman
Lawrence Bai Xiaoman grew up in a poor family in Guizhou and moved to Guangxi to find work. He settled at Yaoshan, married, and worked as a day labourer. Through Auguste Chapdelaine's mission, he learned Catholic teaching and received baptism.
Soon afterwards, the missionary was arrested with other Catholics. Lawrence went to join them and was himself brought before the authorities. He refused to renounce his faith and was executed near Xilin in 1856. The consulted accounts disagree about the February day.
