Leucius of Brindisi

About Leucius of Brindisi

Leucius of Brindisi is remembered as an early bishop whose cult linked the Adriatic city with other Christian communities. A modern scholarly study by Donatella Nuzzo identifies him with Alexandria in Egypt and places his arrival at Brindisi around the transition from the fourth to the fifth century.

The Italian bishops' heritage account cautions that attempts to connect Brindisi's Christian origins directly with the apostles include conjecture. It distinguishes those traditions from evidence that the cult of Leucius was already known to Gregory the Great.

Letters associated with Gregory in 595 and 601 concern the church at Brindisi and relics of the saint.

Nuzzo's study also follows the cult's movement toward other parts of southern Italy and Rome.

The current archdiocesan directory preserves his memory in a parish dedicated to Leucius as the first bishop. His religious significance survives through that local memory even where the details of his life remain uncertain.
