Biography
Liberius I of Ravenna

About Liberius I of Ravenna
Liberius I is remembered among the early bishops of Ravenna. The archdiocese’s succession list places him ninth, between Datus and Agapitus. It separately lists two later bishops named Liberius, so the first belongs to a distinct place in Ravenna’s episcopal tradition. The list gives no years for his tenure.
Agnellus’s medieval account offers a brief portrait rather than a sequence of events. It praises Liberius for charity, faith, kindness, and humility, and says he increased the honor of the Church. The writer also associates him with wisdom. When he reaches the burial, however, he reports only a supposition that Liberius rested with his predecessor. The spaces intended for the years, months, and days of his episcopate remain unfilled.
The historian Thomas Hodgkin emphasized the limits of these earliest Ravenna notices: for the first eleven bishops, Agnellus’s information could not be checked independently. Liberius’s remembered virtues thus survive more clearly than the circumstances of his life. His birth, the duration of his ministry, and a securely dated death remain unknown.
