About Liutwin of Trier

Liutwin was a Frankish churchman remembered for founding Mettlach and serving as bishop of Trier. His foundation on the Saar dates from the late seventh century.

The monastery was his most enduring undertaking. Historian Andreas Heinz describes two parts of the foundation: a church dedicated to Dionysius on higher ground and the monastic complex near the river, with churches honoring Mary and Peter. Liutwin placed the monastery under his episcopal successors, linking its governance to the bishops of Trier. The internal organization of the earliest community is not known.

The earliest surviving Life was written at Mettlach around 1000, centuries after Liutwin’s death. The modern critical catalogue warns that it does not provide reliable evidence for his lifetime, although it became the basis of later biographies. Its stories need to be read as the community’s later remembrance of its founder.

One such story explains the choice of Mettlach through an eagle. According to the Life, Liutwin fell asleep after hunting, and the bird spread its wings to shade his face from the sun. His attendant told him what had happened. Liutwin interpreted it as divine favor toward the place. The same account portrays him asking admission to the community he had endowed and exchanging his secular clothing for monastic dress.

Liutwin succeeded Basinus as bishop of Trier in 705. Heinz’s older account places his death around 717 at Reims.

The current critical catalogue instead dates his death to 722 or 723.

Mettlach’s remembrance of Liutwin continues through pilgrimage. In 2025, the diocese described the annual observance between Ascension and Pentecost, when his shrine is brought forward for the pilgrims and carried in procession through the town.

The church and parish at Mettlach celebrate their patronal feast on September 23.

The local litany also invokes him as protector of the Mettlach valley.
