About Lucia Yi Zhenmei

Lucia Yi Zhenmei was a Chinese lay catechist remembered among the Christians killed in Guizhou in 1862. The Holy See’s account names her alongside the missionary John Peter Néel and three other Chinese companions, placing their deaths on 18 and 19 February.

Later accounts place her birth in 1815 and describe teaching as a sustained part of her life. Granada’s diocesan notice associates her work with children in Mianyang and women in Chongqing, where she lived with her mother and brother after her father’s death.

The Episcopal Church’s commemorative biography describes her teaching women and children without accepting payment. It places her execution on 19 February 1862, after her refusal to abandon her faith. This gives the individual date more precisely than the Vatican’s two-day group notice.

The Missions étrangères de Paris historical overview places her death in its Guizhou mission account, alongside Néel and catechists. This regional setting is more secure than a precise execution-site identification in the sources checked here.

Lucia was included in the Chinese martyrs’ canonization on 1 October 2000.

In the ceremony’s homily, John Paul II distinguished honoring these witnesses from passing judgment on the complicated historical periods through which they lived. That distinction leaves room to remember a Chinese woman’s teaching and fidelity without turning her commemoration into a simple judgment on an entire people or country.
