About Luke Hwang Sok-tu
Luke Hwang Sok-tu came from Yeonpung in Chungcheong Province. He married while young and learned about Catholicism through religious books. He became a Catholic despite his father’s opposition.
The bishops’ conference gives his birth year as 1811.
The Korean encyclopedia instead gives 1813. Luke studied with Daveluy but did not become a priest. He worked as a catechist and missionary assistant and helped Daveluy translate religious books.
When Daveluy was arrested during the persecution of 1866, Luke insisted on accompanying him. He was taken to Seoul and later executed at Galmaemot on March 30, 1866.
