About Matrona of Hurezi

Matrona of Hurezi was a Romanian nun and abbess, born Maria in Săliștea Sibiului on August 2, 1852. Her father left his shepherding life to become a monk on Mount Athos. Her mother took Maria to Sărăcinești Monastery, where she stayed, learned to read, and later received the monastic name Matrona.

She subsequently joined Hurezi, receiving spiritual guidance from Orest, a disciple of Calinic of Cernica. Elected abbess in April 1923, she urged the community toward regular worship, confession, prayer, and voluntary poverty. She later resigned and supported her successor, Epiharia.

The monastery’s account makes clear that reform was difficult. Some nuns resisted the effort to establish common life; others left for the village. Matrona visited their cells to encourage them before relinquishing leadership. The same article’s opening calls her abbess until 1939, but its fuller narrative places her resignation in 1925.

Her church biography describes a severe illness followed by recovery after a vision of the Virgin Mary. This is remembered as a miracle within the community’s devotional account. She continued advising the nuns and praying after leaving office.

During restoration work and cemetery reorganization, the monastery recovered remains beside a brick bearing her name and the date May 5, 1939. Ambrozia Șerban reported this discovery in 2026 and described Matrona as the community’s protector.

That reported inscription differs from the older chronology, still reflected in a May 2026 church notice marking ninety-one years since her death. The Romanian Orthodox Church canonized her in 2025. Her local proclamation took place at Hurezi on May 5, 2026.

Archbishop Varsanufie also names her among the patrons of the Archdiocese of Râmnic.
