About Matthias Feng De
Matthias Feng De was born in Xiao Bashi, Shanxi, in 1855. He became a Catholic as an adult and received confirmation from Bishop Gregorio Grassi. When famine struck in 1893, he moved to Taiyuan. His worsening eyesight limited his ability to support his family through farming.
Grassi employed him as a night watchman at the cathedral. Feng also joined the Franciscan Third Order. He remained associated with the cathedral community during the attacks of 1900 and was killed in Taiyuan on 9 July. He was canonized in 2000 with the Chinese martyrs.
