About Maura of Constantinople

Maura was a deaconess and the head of a women’s monastery at Constantinople. The Orthodox Church in America places her in the first half of the fifth century and says that she founded the community in which she later died.

The consulted notice is very short. It preserves her ecclesiastical role and foundation, but does not establish the circumstances of her childhood, her exact dates, or a fuller sequence of personal events. Its October 31 listing differs from the November 9 commemoration that it records for Greek usage. Both belong to her church memory, rather than proving an exact historical death day.
