About Memmius of Châlons

Memmius, known in French as Memmie, is remembered as the first bishop of Châlons. The diocese places him at the beginning of its episcopal succession and associates him with the first preaching of Christianity in the region.

The details of his life are much less secure than his place in local remembrance. Joseph Van Der Straeten’s study distinguishes an early account of the discovery of his relics from biographies written centuries later. The oldest surviving Life is preserved in ninth- and tenth-century manuscripts, but its composition date remains debated.

A later medieval version sends Memmius to Châlons under Pope Clement’s authority. It describes the city’s initial hostility and his withdrawal to a nearby cave, where he continues praying and teaching.

The relic account offers a different kind of evidence. Its author describes a drought, water appearing at Memmius’s tomb during a night service, and the community’s investigation of the burial. The narrative then records people seeking healing at the shrine, including children with difficulty walking and a woman who could not see. The writer closes by claiming to describe what he and others had seen. Whatever judgment is made about the miracles, the account presents a community gathered at the tomb in worship and expectation of help.

Van Der Straeten also shows how later writers adapted inherited material. One version changes the burial’s location from within the town to outside it, an alteration he connects with the abbey’s claim to possess its founder’s body.

The diocese still describes the village of Saint-Memmie as having developed around his tomb. It also points to cathedral paintings and glass depicting the story of a drowned child restored to life.

Nominis lists Memmius as patron of the Diocese of Châlons-en-Champagne and gives his local feast as August 5.
