Muredach of Killala

About Muredach of Killala

Muredach, also called Muiredach, is remembered as the founder and first bishop of Killala. His dates are uncertain. Genealogical tradition links him to Cenél Lóegaire and names several brothers associated with churches in the Westmeath–Cavan area.

Those genealogies suggest activity in the late sixth century, creating a difficulty for the familiar story that Patrick personally appointed him. Ailbhe Mac Shamhráin considers the Patrician connection likely to reflect Armagh’s later interests in Killala. The tradition cannot safely supply a precise date for Muredach’s appointment.

The historian places his probable activity in western Sligo and identifies him tentatively with the Murithach listed among early bishops. He may have settled on Inishmurray as a hermit, though the island also has a strong association with Mo-Laisse. His death year is not recorded; August 12 is the date preserved for his commemoration.

His name should not be confused with the Muiredach commemorated on the famous high cross at Monasterboice. Patrick Duffy’s account distinguishes the Killala saint from the later person named in that cross’s inscription. The Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference identifies Muredach as patron of the Diocese of Killala and gives his feast as August 12.

His name also belongs to the cathedral at Ballina, on the River Moy. Its foundation stone was laid on May 24, 1827, many centuries after his lifetime. The sanctuary’s stained glass places Muredach among other Irish saints, preserving his local memory within the worship of a later community. The building is a dedication to him, not a surviving church from his lifetime.
