Nicodemus the Prosphora Baker

Portrait of Nicodemus the Prosphora Baker

About Nicodemus the Prosphora Baker

Nicodemus was a monk of the Kiev Caves whose remembered work was baking the bread used in the church’s worship. The Orthodox Church in America places him alongside Spyridon and says that the two fulfilled this responsibility for thirty years.

The short account describes Nicodemus as leading a disciplined monastic life and associates his relics with the Near Caves of Anthony. It gives much more detail about Spyridon than about Nicodemus; those episodes should not simply be transferred to his coworker. His October 31 commemoration preserves a life remembered chiefly through shared labor. The consulted notice does not establish an exact birth or death date.
