About Oliva of Brescia

Oliva of Brescia is remembered in Catholic tradition as a Christian martyr. The brief account published by the Catholic Church in Norway places her death under Emperor Hadrian and associates her remains with the church of Saint Afra in Brescia. It records her commemoration on 5 March.

A parish account from Borgo Piave preserves a fuller tradition while warning that its ancient sources are historically unreliable. In that story, Oliva is discovered praying at the tombs of the Brescian martyrs and arrested. A prefect named Aurelian attempts to make her abandon Christianity. She refuses and dies while praying. These episodes belong to the received martyr story, rather than an independently established sequence of events.

Even the year is uncertain. The Norwegian notice’s heading gives 138, while the parish account reports a tradition of 119. The parish also records the later transfer of some relics to the Capuchins at Salò under Pope Sixtus V. This is a history of her remembered presence in local devotion; it does not resolve the uncertainties surrounding her lifetime.
