About Patiens of Lyon

Patiens was a fifth-century bishop of Lyon whose work is known chiefly through the letters of Sidonius Apollinaris. He supported church building and relief for people affected by famine.

In his account of the relief effort, Sidonius describes grain distributed at Patiens's own expense after Gothic raids and the burning of crops. It was given freely, rather than sold, and reached communities beyond his own ecclesiastical province.

Historian Marcelo Candido da Silva cautions against treating this praise as proof that public responsibility had disappeared. The letters celebrate personal generosity, but a bishop was also a public figure whose office carried obligations toward people in need.

Patiens also helped settle a disputed episcopal succession at Chalon. Sidonius describes three competing candidates and a divided community. Patiens and Euphronius chose John, who had not sought the office, after consulting their fellow bishops. The account presents their decision as a way out of factional rivalry.

His concern for the memory of earlier church leaders is independently attested by Constantius of Lyon. In the dedication of the Life of Germanus of Auxerre, Constantius says that Patiens repeatedly asked him to write the work for readers of his own time and those to come. He accepts the commission while asking for Patiens's prayers.

A second letter, addressed to Bishop Censurius, confirms that Patiens commissioned the Life and explains that Censurius requested its wider circulation. These letters preserve a direct record of his role in encouraging the work.

The date of his death remains uncertain. Nominis places it around 480.

The Bollandists favor the same approximate year while allowing several years on either side.

Andre Pelletier instead places the end of his episcopate around 491 and records his burial at Saint-Just in Lyon.

A medieval record cited by the Bollandists describes the opening of his tomb and the placement of his relics in a new container in 1287.

His local commemoration is September 11.
