Paul the Obedient of the Kiev Caves

About Paul the Obedient of the Kiev Caves

Paul was a monk of the Far Caves at Kiev. His short Orthodox Life remembers the demanding tasks assigned to him by the monastery’s superior and the care with which he performed them. When he was not occupied with another duty, he ground grain at the millstone. The notice connects this labor with inward prayer.

The account gives no exact life dates or detailed family history. His September 10 commemoration joins him with his namesake, Paul of Nicaea. The title “the Obedient” preserves the community’s memory of his monastic work rather than a separate secular surname.
