About Peter Choe Chang-hub
Peter Choe Chang-hub came from an interpreter’s family in Seoul. His half-brother John Choe Chang-hyon died during the persecution of 1801. Peter later married Magdalena Son So-byog and renewed his religious practice.
He received baptism during the epidemic of 1821. Most of the couple’s children died young, while Barbara Choe Yong-i and their youngest daughter survived.
During the persecution of 1839, Peter was arrested with family members. He refused demands to deny his faith or disclose other Catholics’ whereabouts despite severe punishment.
Peter was executed outside Seoul’s Small West Gate on December 29, 1839.
