About Peter Liu Ziyu
Peter Liu Ziyu, also recorded as Peter Liu Zeyu, was born in Zhujiaxie, Hebei, in 1843. He worked in a pottery factory and remained unmarried. In July 1900, other Catholics urged him to leave the village for a safer place, but he chose to stay.
On 17 July, guards and Boxers came to arrest Christians. Liu was taken captive and questioned about abandoning his faith. The church account remembers him continuing to pray before he was killed. He was canonized in 2000 with the Chinese martyrs.
