About Peter Yu Tae-chol

Peter Yu Tae-chol was born in 1826 into an interpreter’s family in Seoul. His father was Augustine Yu Chin-gil. Peter and his younger brother practiced Catholicism, while their mother and older sister opposed it.

During the persecution of 1839, Peter was moved by his imprisoned father’s example. The bishops’ conference account records that he surrendered to the authorities in July and was imprisoned after questioning.

Officials tried to make him deny his faith through threats and severe punishment. He refused and was strangled in prison on October 31, 1839.
