About Philip Zhang Zhihe
Philip Zhang Zhihe was a Chinese seminarian from Shanxi. He entered the junior seminary at Dongergou as a teenager and continued his studies at Taiyuan. The church account identifies him as a member of the Franciscan third order; he had not been ordained a priest.
When violence reached Taiyuan in 1900, the seminary closed and many students returned home. Philip was among five students arrested and imprisoned with missionaries and religious sisters. He was killed with the group in July. He was canonized in 2000 with the Chinese martyrs.
