Biography
Platonida of Argeș

About Platonida of Argeș
Platonida of Argeș was known before her monastic life as Despina Milița, wife of the Wallachian ruler Neagoe Basarab. She belonged to the Serbian Branković family and married Neagoe in 1505, before he became ruler in 1512. They had six children.
Her precise parentage has been debated. Historians Teodora Popovici and Elisabeta Negrău note that modern scholars generally identify her father as Jovan Branković, while rejecting an earlier chronicler’s genealogy. They also argue that her artistic commissions helped establish the family’s dynastic standing, as well as expressing devotion. Their interpretation places her religious patronage within the political concerns of a ruling household.
The Romanian Church remembers her assistance to poor and sick people and her support for church building. A tradition preserved in her life says that she sold jewelry when funds for Curtea de Argeș Monastery ran short. The account presents this as a remembered act of generosity, rather than a surviving financial record.
An icon dated 1522 gives a tangible glimpse of her devotion. It shows Despina with her daughters Stana and Roxanda at the feet of Saints Simeon Nemanja and Sava Nemanjić. She owned it during exile in Sibiu; it later went to Ostrov. Another icon, dated 1524, depicts her holding her dead son Theodosie before the Virgin Mary holding Christ. Popovici and Negrău read these images as bringing maternal grief and religious hope together with the family’s claim to rule.
Neagoe died in 1521, and Despina served as regent for their young son Theodosie. His death the following year brought another loss. She later entered monastic life with the name Platonida. The church’s account locates her profession at Ostrov and remembers her encouraging the other sisters through prayer and daily work. She died in 1554 and was buried at Curtea de Argeș. Her feast is September 26.
