About Regnobert of Bayeux

Regnobert was a seventh-century bishop of Bayeux. The diocese’s historical list records him in 627, identifying this as an attested year rather than the beginning or end of his episcopate. The surviving outline of his life is much narrower than the later history of his veneration.

Christophe Maneuvrier’s study identifies a Life written in the eighth or ninth century. Another important account concerns the movement of relics attributed to Regnobert and a deacon named Zeno. Little is known about Zeno himself. This material belongs chiefly to the history of the saints’ remembrance, rather than to a contemporary account of Regnobert’s ministry.

The translation narrative describes Hervé removing the relics from Saint-Exupère at Bayeux in 846. It presents the journey as a protective mission authorized by the saints, while acknowledging the absence of the bishop’s permission. Maneuvrier questions whether safeguarding the relics was the only motive: enriching a family sanctuary may also have mattered. He dates the writing to two stages in the later ninth century. The account therefore needs to be read as a purposeful religious narrative, not simply an inventory of movements.

The relic traditions later became contradictory. François Neveux notes that two bodies in Burgundy were associated with the bishop. Medieval representations at Bayeux likewise show bishops with two similar names, encouraging the idea of separate fourth- and seventh-century saints. Neveux raises possible confusion with the murdered nobleman Rambert. These competing traditions do not provide a sound basis for creating a second Regnobert of Bayeux.

The Catholic calendar maintained by Nominis lists Regnobert as patron of the Diocese of Bayeux-Lisieux and commemorates him on October 24. His name also survives beyond Normandy. The church at Les Gras in the Doubs is dedicated to Saint Renobert. The regional park’s heritage account records its renovation in 1988 and the preservation of an older bell from 1769. This is a concrete witness to his continuing local remembrance, even where the details of his own life remain limited.
