About Restituta of Sora

Restituta of Sora is remembered as a young Christian martyr and honored as the city’s patron. Her feast on 27 May brings the local community together in prayer and public celebration. She is also a patron of the diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo, alongside Thomas Aquinas and John the Baptist.

The story of her life comes through medieval accounts written long after the period in which they place her martyrdom. Alessandra Tanzilli identifies versions of the Passion from approximately the ninth and eleventh centuries.

In the Passion attributed to Gregory of Terracina, Restituta is a young woman from Rome who chooses devotion to Christ over marriage. The story describes divine guidance bringing her to Sora, where she stays in a widow’s home. Her prayer brings healing to the widow’s son, Cyrillus, and draws others toward Christianity. These episodes belong to the saint’s legend.

The same narrative places her before the official Agathius, who demands sacrifice to the gods and offers marriage. She refuses both. Imprisonment and threats do not change her allegiance, and the story ends with her execution beside a river, together with Cyrillus and two companions. Christians recover their bodies and bury them near a church dedicated to John the Baptist.

Tanzilli connects the growth of devotion with medieval rulers and the local church. Her study traces the importance of Restituta’s sanctuary through documents, rebuilding, and its central position beside civic space.

Local observance gives that memory a familiar shape. On the eve of the feast, Restituta’s statue is carried to the cathedral, recalling her imprisonment. The next morning it returns to her church. Tanzilli’s presentation describes this movement as a remembrance of the final stages of the martyrdom narrative.

Traditional images show her carrying a martyr’s palm and wearing a wreath of roses.

A diocesan report for the 2023 celebration also records a charity football match organized alongside the religious festivities, with proceeds intended for families facing hardship.

Whether the Restituta honored at Sora is the same martyr venerated at Ischia and Naples remains debated. This account follows the Sora tradition without treating the different local cults as proof of separate people.
