Romanus of Kirzhach

About Romanus of Kirzhach
Romanus was a disciple and fellow ascetic of Sergius of Radonezh. The church account associates him with the foundation of the Annunciation monastery on the Kirzhach River, in the forests of the Vladimir region. Sergius established a church there in 1371 and remained for several years. When he returned to the Trinity monastery, Romanus was entrusted with the new community.
Metropolitan Alexei blessed that responsibility and ordained Romanus to the priesthood. The notice remembers him as a strict teacher whose own conduct supported his instruction. His work was therefore the sustained formation of a community after its better-known founder had departed. He died on July 29, 1392, and was buried in the Annunciation church. Later manuscript notices called him a wonderworker. The surviving account gives no detailed sequence of individual miracles or a fuller account of his earlier life.
