Rusticus of Cahors

About Rusticus of Cahors
Rusticus served as bishop of Cahors in the early seventh century. Before becoming a bishop, he was an archdeacon at Rodez and held responsibility for the royal chapel. His career connected the churches of southern Gaul with the court of Chlothar the Second.
He belonged to the family of Desiderius, later known as Didier of Cahors. Their brother Syagrius also held high office. Historian Patrick Geary places Rusticus’s consecration in 623 and records his participation in the council of Clichy in 626 or 627.
Much of the narrative survives in the Life of Desiderius, which also preserves family letters. These are different kinds of evidence: the biographical work is a later composition, placed by its editor Bruno Krusch no earlier than the end of the eighth century.
That Life says Rusticus was killed by inhabitants of Cahors after seven years or more as bishop. It describes alarm both in the city and at court. The king’s response, in the narrative, was severe: punishments included mutilation, execution, exile and permanent enslavement.
A letter preserved in the Life gives the loss a personal voice. Herchenefreda, the brothers’ mother, tells Desiderius of Rusticus’s killing, urges him to pursue the case and asks him to guard his own life. Her grief follows the deaths of her husband and another son.
The year is not stated consistently in modern accounts. Geary places the killing around 629, while the Catholic Encyclopedia gives 630.
Geary suggests that the killing may have been connected with rivalry between Dagobert and his half-brother Charibert, whose Aquitanian kingdom included Cahors.
Raymond Rey’s study of Didier’s buildings identifies a basilica dedicated to Saint Peter across the Lot, built where Rusticus had been killed.
Nominis records his local recognition as a martyr and an August 19 feast. Its account connects his death with rebuking powerful men, but that explanation should be distinguished from the earlier letter’s brief report of his murder.
