Sabbatius of Solovki

About Sabbatius of Solovki
Sabbatius sought increasingly secluded places for monastic life. The church account places him at the Cyril monastery by White Lake and later at Valaam, but says that growing attention to him led him to leave. At a chapel near the Vyg River he met Herman, who knew the remote Solovki islands. They crossed by boat and established cells beneath a cross near Sekirnaya Hill.
The pair endured isolation and lived by manual effort. When Herman left for supplies, Sabbatius sensed that his own death was approaching and returned to the mainland. He received communion from the abbot Nathanael and stayed near the chapel. A merchant named John also met him there. Sabbatius died on September 27, 1435, and Nathanael and John buried him. His remains were later transferred to the island monastery, linking the secluded pioneer’s memory with the community that developed there.
