Savva of Storozhev

About Savva of Storozhev

Savva belonged to the circle of Sergius of Radonezh and became a confessor to the brethren. The received Life follows him through leadership at Dubenka and at the Trinity monastery before his move to the hill of Storozhi near Zvenigorod. Prince Yuri, whom Savva guided spiritually, supported the new foundation dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God.

The account gives concrete details of his work: carrying water, digging a well, and helping establish the community’s buildings and enclosure. He also withdrew to a cave for prayer. Later tradition associated him with Yuri’s military success and with miraculous protection of visitors to his monastery. Savva died in the early fifteenth century; accounts disagree about the year. His veneration developed around his burial and an image of him, and churchwide recognition followed in 1547.

The Zvenigorod museum distinguishes the late Life from earlier documents. Yuri’s grants of 1402–1403 and 1404 are the first sources naming the foundation and its abbot. Much of the personal narrative comes from sixteenth-century Lives written long after Savva. Even his death year is disputed: the Life’s author avoided a precise date, and the familiar 1407 derives from a later source. A further charter may concern either Savva himself or another abbot with the same name. These uncertainties limit the dates that can responsibly be assigned to his career. The museum places his first painted image around 1490 and connects his wider recognition with the council of 1547.
