Portrait of Scholastica

About Scholastica

Scholastica is remembered through a family visit in Gregory the Great's Dialogues. Benedict's sister, devoted to God from childhood, meets him for prayer and conversation. The meeting takes place outside his abbey, where they share a meal after a day spent praising God. She asks him to remain until morning so their conversation can continue, but he says he cannot spend the night away. When he refuses to stay overnight, she prays; a sudden storm keeps him there. They spend the night talking about spiritual things. Gregory presents this miracle as the triumph of her greater love. His next chapter describes Benedict seeing her soul ascend like a dove and arranging her burial.

The story has remained close to Benedictine hearts. The Sisters of Boerne describe Scholastica's faith as an invitation to put love first. Their reflection brings her memory into the hurts of contemporary life: bereavement, racial injustice, and divisions within a community. It invites prayer that changes the way people treat one another, rather than leaving the saint's story safely in the past. A novena shared on their page turns this invitation toward patience, kindness, gratitude, humility, and forgiveness.

Scholastica's remembrance also reaches beyond Benedictine communities. The Romanian Patriarchate's news agency includes her in its 2026 series honoring holy women, with her commemoration on February 10. The series presents these women as companions and examples for Christian life today.

In the United States, the Catholic liturgical calendar keeps February 10 as her memorial under the title Virgin. This gives her a continuing place in the Church's prayer without supplying the missing details of her life.
