About Seiriol of Penmon

Seiriol was a Welsh monastic founder associated with Penmon on Anglesey. The Dictionary of Welsh Biography places his life approximately between 500 and 550 and identifies him as Penmon’s founder and first abbot. It also records his importance as the chief saint of Dindaethwy and Penmaenmawr. These local associations preserve more about his legacy than about the daily events of his life.

The older Dictionary of National Biography connects Penmon with a monastic settlement on nearby Puffin Island, also called Seiriol’s Isle. It describes the two foundations as continuing in changing forms until the Reformation. Penmon’s parish church bears his dedication.

A familiar Anglesey tradition links Seiriol with Cybi of Holyhead. The two saints were said to meet near springs at Clorach. Their different journeys in relation to the sun explained the contrasting names given to them: Seiriol Wyn and Cybi Felyn. This is a story handed down about their friendship, rather than an independently established account of their daily routine.

The surviving buildings at Penmon should not all be assigned to Seiriol’s lifetime. Cadw associates the foundation and possibly the holy well with the sixth century, but identifies the structure around the well as much later. Much of the standing priory belongs to its thirteenth-century Augustinian period. The carved cross inside the parish church dates from the tenth century. These remains show later generations maintaining a religious site associated with the early founder.

The earliest calendars cited by the Dictionary of Welsh Biography place Seiriol’s feast on February 1. The Church in Wales lectionary gives him a February 3 commemoration as an abbot. His memory remains attached to Penmon’s church and well, where the early foundation and the later medieval remains form parts of the same sacred landscape.
