About Symmachus

Symmachus came from Sardinia and was probably born around the middle of the fifth century. He reported receiving baptism after reaching Rome, but the date of that move is unknown.

His pontificate began on 22 November 498 and ended on 19 July 514.

Laurentius was elected by a rival group on the same day. Theodoric initially ruled in Symmachus's favor, rather than first recognizing his rival.

The dispute returned, bringing accusations and violence. Surviving biographies take sides, so neither guilt nor innocence should be presented as independently established. A synod declined to judge him; its dating remains debated between 501 and 502.

His ministry also included practical help: money and clothing for exiled bishops, aid for captives, and shelter for poor people and pilgrims. The Vatican account also credits him with extending the Gloria to Sundays and martyrs' feasts, improving Roman basilicas, and providing a hospice at Porto.

His supporters produced forged accounts of earlier popes to strengthen their case. That fact does not establish Symmachus himself as their author.

He died in Rome on 19 July 514 and was buried at the Vatican. His pontificate left lasting questions about papal accountability.
