Symphorian of Autun

About Symphorian of Autun

Symphorian is remembered as a young Christian martyr of Autun. His traditional story begins with a public procession honoring the goddess Cybele. He refuses to join the worship and mocks the procession, bringing him before a Roman official. The account presents his refusal as a declaration of Christian allegiance in a city where other forms of worship remained prominent.

As he is led outside the city to be executed, his mother encourages him from the walls to remain faithful. This scene became central to the memory of his martyrdom. It should be read as part of the received religious narrative, rather than as a transcript of an independently documented exchange.

The surviving account was written much later than the events it describes. Historian Jean-Charles Picard places the Passion probably near the middle of the fifth century, around the construction of a basilica over the saint’s tomb. He questions its historical reliability, noting that the official named in the narrative cannot be securely identified in the relevant records. The text therefore offers firmer evidence for the development of devotion than for a precise reconstruction of the trial.

Even the century of Symphorian’s death is disputed. The narrative’s reference to Aurelian has been interpreted differently from traditions placing him under Marcus Aurelius. His cult was important by the fifth century and spread beyond Burgundy, but that later prominence does not resolve the chronological problem.

His name remains part of parish life in the Côte Chalonnaise, whose parish and church at Touches honor him as patron. His feast is observed on 22 August. At Treigny, he shares patronage with Blaise. The church’s heritage association records its dedication to both martyrs in 1492, preserving another local expression of his enduring remembrance.
